I thought in the context of what is happening at the moment it would be a good time to talk about how they dealt with such actions under the Bloody Code.

Have you ever wondered where the expression “reading the riot act” comes from? Well back in the 18th Century there was a Riot Act. This particular piece of legislation dealt with the problem of how to disperse an unruly mob.

This got even more important to the upper classes with events in America and France. Particularly the latter as it was an actual popular revolt rather than the machinations of several upper class- slave owning- landlords.

The Riot Act is somewhat uniquely British. No other country that I’m aware of approached the problem in quite the same way.

Upon the situation getting out of control a local official, usually a Magistrate would read this part of the text of the Act to the crowd.

“Our Sovereign Lord the King chargeth and commandeth all persons, being assembled, immediately to disperse themselves, and peaceably to depart to their habitations, or to their lawful business, upon the pains contained in the act made in the first year of King George, for preventing tumults and riotous assemblies. God Save the King!”

If the crowd failed to abide by said proclamation within the said time ANYONE was immune from prosecution in any action taken to contain the riot.

Now do I think this is a good way of dealing with riots? Fuck no! Especially not when said riots were triggered by allegations of excessive Police violence. However I do admire the old Riot Act for how incredibly civilized and British it is in giving rioter’s fair warning.
That it grants anyone taking on rioters who have ignored the warning carte blanche to do as they please is appalling but that’s just typical of Georgian Britain. If you don’t play the game they kill you!

Mind you a bayonet up the arse may well be preferable to having to face horrors like this...

Well they’re all a problem but not so much as this.

No I am talking about the greatest threat to the survival of humanity.

That is...

CHILDREN!

Well not Children as such but rather the fact there are far too many of them.

This isn’t nearly emphasised enough in the media so here’s some perspective...

Sir David Attenborough: The foremost personality in the British study of Ecology. More than just a distinctive voice, an elite camera team and a seemingly unlimited budget Sir David is a leading light in his field, the conservation of the natural world.

So he clearly knows his shit, and when he speaks up on his specialist subject people listen.

Or should do...

Recently he pointed out a horrifying fact. That since he started making nature programmes back in the 1950s the human population has doubled from 3 to 6 billion. As he said then “we cannot go on like this.”

Has there been a massive outcry? No there hasn’t clearly! The comment would have been cut if it wasn’t a live broadcast and everyone dismissed it as the ramblings of an old man: Ageist bullshit. Half of the intelligence of this man would be an achievement for most educated people. It would be a downright miracle for the common pleb.

Attenborough has a point and the time for action is now.

As it stands having children is right held by anyone with functioning reproductive organs. I believe it should be a privilege held only by those responsible enough to use it.

I’ll admit a bias here. I have a pretty shitty family background. I’m pretty sure it’s my parents who are responsible for the 7 years of crippling depression and anxiety I have suffered so far and am likely to continue to suffer until my, probably early, demise.

Trying to convince me the nuclear family is all sunshine and rainbows is a losing battle: I know the reality first hand. There are neglectful and abusive single parents but there are just as many neglectful and abusive “respectable families.”

But this bias gives me an insight. I know firsthand that not everyone capable of being a parent deserves to be. The social problems that the right often blames on single parent families and the lack of a “father figure” are nothing of the sort. They are the result of bad parenting regardless of specific circumstances.

Oh and far from being part of the solution Religious attitudes are part of the problem. With annoyingly backward views on all the technology that could save our civilisation from quite literally devouring itself and a dedication to the various forms of “go forth and multiply.”

Newsflash arseholes! When God said that there were 2 humans on Earth: Now there are 6 billion. We need to grow the fuck up and make the tough decisions. The American left, for all their clinging to absurd Political Correctness and failure to understand irony have a very good joke about this primitive attitude (Jay Leno’s originally I think.)

“Life begins at Conception and ends at execution.”

It’s supposed to highlight the stupidity of the pro death penalty-anti abortion mob in America but it has a wider point that is often missed. Badly brought up kids go on to commit crimes and criminals go on to be punished.

With the damage that the comfortable lifestyles we aspire to, nay demand, inflicts on the world around us it is simple. Less people less of a problem. We cannot exactly cull a sentient people, but we have the technology to control fertility and ensure that only those who deserve the privilege of raising children... be they a married couple, an unmarried couple, a gay couple or a single person... get it whilst those who don’t are prohibited from creating a life they will go on to irreparably damage.

It’s interesting for me because under these kinds of conditions I would never have been born. Frankly though I’d prefer that to living a shit life on an overcrowded planet.

There is a disparity between the Tough Justice version of risk taking (Felonies, Pregnancy etc.) and the Courtesans/Doxy version.

This is because Tough Justice was winging it's way to print when the decision was made to make Pregnancy a result of 1 or 2 rather than just 1 in Courtesans.

If you think your games can do with a bit more risk taking please feel free to apply this mechanic to Felony, Pregnancy and PIP rolls.

On a similar note stay tuned for a very big Bolt On. So big it will be it's own PDF free to download from here.

Grim & Gritty Tough Justice will provide more detailed (and potentially lethal) Combat rules.

I don't write military 18th Century games because there are better writers out there who do (like Neil Gow.) However I am a big fan of the common soldiers of that time and their sacrastic attitude to their toffee nosed clueless officers.

It strikes me in an age where we are still led by a bunch of inbred, obscenly wealthy, old Etonian fuckwits it is high time we revived that spirit.

Thus I have rewritten the iconic "Over the Hills and Far Away" for the modern protestor or better still soldier. I sent this privately to Seaside Man Tom and he liked it I'd love to hear what you all think.

Better still, if you like it record your own version and post it on the interwebs.

Lets all get together and mock our idiotic foreign policy!

Over the Hills and Far Away (Trad. Modified by Ian Warner)

There’s next to pittance on the drum
For those who volunteers to come
To fight whoever’s the foe today
Over the hills and far away

Chorus
Oh O’er the hills and o’er the main
To where the politicians say
Queen Liz commands
You must obey
Over the hills and far away

All gentlefolk who have a mind
To serve a Queen that’s good and kind
And those who’ve no choice any way
Over the hills and far away

Chorus

Where duty calls you, you must go
To stand and face another foe
But part of you will always stay
Over the hills and far away

Chorus

If you should fall to rite of war
Of a good send off you can be sure
We’ll ask that Wotton Basset play
Over the hills and far away

Chorus

Through smoke and fire and IED
This war ain’t pointless can’t you see?
Random invasion is the way
Over the hills and far away

Chorus

So fall in all and grab a gun
With flash bangs blazing like the sun
Whilst so called allies’ shots do stray
Over the hills and far away

Chorus

 Comments

2 GMs 1 Mic Game of the Week!

I sat down to one of my favourite dramas tonight. Luther tells the story of DCI John Luther. A mentally unstable man haunted by his past who tracks down mentally unstable killers haunted by their past.

Takes one to know one I suppose.

Now tonights episode was yet another themed serial killer. This one's theme being Roleplaying Games.

Is there a problem with that? After all my games dredge up almost as much contreversy as your average brutal cop show.

However with this Character no attempt at all was made to emphasise he didn't represent the hobby as a whole. The plot wouldn't have been harmed at all by having Luther investigate some fat, sweaty, beardy, middle aged man living in his parents basement and have him turn out to be a nice guy who only wants to help. In fact that's the sort of thing that gels perfectly with the show's sense of humour.

Am I offended at this program? Of course not! I KNOW it's fiction. The problem is there are a LOT of idiots out there who don't.

Most of my gaming group intake is from noobs. Something like this without a balancing message like the one I described or even just a little disclaimer at the end is just the sort of thing to paint us roleplayers as the wrong kind of freaks and weirdos.

I'm not calling for censorship or for the BBC to go to far out of its way just make it clear this psycho does not represent the roleplaying comunity. If I have to write fucking disclaimers into every fucking introduction you should make the effor too!

SHUT THE FUCK UP!

Just finished listening to the Audiobook of the hillarious Go the Fuck to Sleep by Adam Mansbach. It's written and ilustrated in the style of a kid's book but it expresses the exasperation of parents everywhere with strong language. He even got Samuel L "motherfucking" Jackson to narrate it in the audio book!

Of course poor old Mansbach got torn into by some prudish critics and as the author of Chav: The Knifing, Wizkid: The Cheapeningand God help me Courtesans: Sex and Society I can empathise with his plight.

Some people, particularly in America and particularly on the Right seem to have a real problem processing the concept "spoof" through their tiny closed minds. No Go the Fuck to Sleep isn't supposed to be a kids book!

It's a brutally honest book by a parent for parents about how fucking annoying kids are.

Having said that if I was stupid enough to become a parent I would read this story to my kids.

OMFG! You may say. Why would I do such a thing? Swearing is part of life. Kids are going to learn about it some time. I don't know about you but I was using the word shit by 5 years old, fuck by 6 and it wasn't until I was 14 that I realised cunt was stronger than either of those two (I'd been using it irregulaly for no other reason than I didn't think it was as asthetically pleasing.)

People who go on and on about "strong language poluting our little children's minds" should try talking to a fucking child once in a while. They're just as nasty as adults are if not more so.

This is Earth. People whatever their age, gender or beliefs are arseholes.

That is all...

Obviously with the Bloody Code as a setting Tough Justice can come across as very anti death penalty at times. So for the sake of balance I shall list a few crimes that really should carry the death penalty in this series of irregular articles.

Part 1 Spamming
Clearly people need to sell their shizzle and the Internet is a great place to do it. However the kind of spamming seen here on blog.co.uk where robot accounts set up blogs that do nothing but list products for sale and worst still post comments on the blogs of real people just to piss them off really annoy me to the point where I think Spamming should be defined in law and made a capital crime for whoever authorised it.

It may sound harsh and petty but the internet is a place of discussion and reflection above all else. If you wish you can follow my lead and set up blogs that discuss artistic (hah) endevors which you have for sale but don't just list products for strangers in a robotic manner.

If you do you are crossing the line to the point where I think the hangman should cometh!

In anticipation of the release of Courtesans I thought I'd take some time to explain how to work around having both kinds of Character in the same game.

Of course a Courtesan is already a viable concept for a Tough Justice Character you may want to make use of the actual Courtesans rules. They are after all UTTERLY AWESOME!

Yeah you may want to adjust the power level slightly but apart from that, the differences are quite cosmetic really.

Here is how to use the rules from Courtesans in Tough Justice and vice a versa.

Courtesan Defendants
It's unlikely the corrupt world of Georgian society would let a Courtesan anywhere near a Dock but it could happen! If so the following should be taken into account.

Equivelency: Manners is the Courtesan equivelent of Composure, Spite the Courtesan Equivelent of Jibe and Performance can be used to decive a Jury.

Starting CP: The Defence may add the Courtesan's current Legend to their Case Points. The Prosecution may add her current Scandal.

Courtesan PCs
You can play a Courtesan PC but a lot of her skill set won't be of much use in the Tough Justice Case. To mitigate this a Courtesan may seduce and perform a sex act upon a target in a single action. Both rolls adding to CP.

Pregnancy Advanced rules are automatically in play when there are Courtesan PCs.

Combining Games
If you wish to combine the two games perhaps having a House of Courtesans intervene on the behalf of a Sister or Admirer a Tough Justice Case takes up 1 Turn of a Courtesans Season. Helping your Team to success nets a Courtesan a dice roll of Resources of her Choice. Failing nets her a Scandal point as her involvement is revealed.

In Doxy this sort of stuff will be covered in the book. In Courtesans it never occured to me until Grim suggested it :S
